The Project:

District on Pallet is a hand crafted map of the District of Columbia using only an X-Acto and Wood Burning knife.

The Concept:

One of the most striking images of any city is it's figure ground. The collective profiles of each building start to tell the story of a place's urban makeup. For the District of Columbia this is seen though the cities major diagonal boulevards, sculptural civic buildings, and grand open spaces such as the National Mall. District on Pallet seeks to bring the warmth of wood into the often cold nature of the typical monochromatic figure ground. Strong vertical lines created by the pallets connection joints reinforce the underlying grid of DC while existing knots found throughout the wood mimic more organic features of the city such as rock creek park.
